House Insurance Overview

House insurance is available in two main forms and most households carry both types of insurance. The most important insurance covers the building itself (buildings insurance), and will generally cover you up to the limit of re-building the property should the building itself become so damaged that re-building is required.

The other common type of house insurance covers your possessions (contents insurance) and may cover all the house contents (including cash) in the event of fire, flood or theft. Each policy should be carefully read so that you know the circumstances in which your policy will pay out, and exactly what is covered. You should examine when the insurer will pay out, and more importantly, when they won't!

You should pay attention to whether they will pay 'new for old' and if goods and cash are covered whilst outside the house. In some cases bicycles may be covered if they are in outbuildings, but not every insurance would automatically provide cover for this. In some cases, you may be reimbursed for possessions lost or stolen whilst on holiday. Be careful if you claim on your holiday insurance for this type of loss as in some cases you holiday insurance will claim from your huse insurance (proving you were already covered for this loss anyway), and as a result, your house contents premium may go up.

Some insurers now even go and buy replacement goods on your behalf rather than sending you the cash to make your own purchases. This both saves them money if they can get a good deal, and helps to prevent fraudulent claims.
