Life Insurance Overview

Life insurance is very important and is sometimes over-looked in the day to day routine of our lives. In a worse case scenario, the question has to be asked: 'how will my dependants fare if I am suddenly taken ill or die'? Most of us try to avoid thinking this way, but it makes sense to make some provision in the first place, and important to review that provision regularly.

It is always worth looking at existing provision that you may have as part of a pension or mortgage where there is often an element of life insurance. In many cases a surviving spouse may be entitled to half of a pension of the principle were to die, but you should not assume this to be the case. Read the small-print or get in touch with your insurer or broker to find out.

This type of insurance should be considered along with the writing of a will, but please bear in mind that if probate takes some time to come through, your dependants won't be able to make use of your estate in the meantime.

In order to work out how much provision is available, you must basically look at what money would be available to your dependents should you die, and is it possible to replace your current monetary contribution to your dependant's upkeep with an insurance package? consider what would be needed to keep your dependents 'in the manner to which they are accustomed' to use a much-quoted phrase. Like most insurance, this type ofcover will need to be regularly reviewed to ensure that it is adequate for your requirements
