This can be a problem where you claim on your travel insurance for something that is covered under your house contents. The travel insurer may make a claim against your house insurance resulting in a rise in your premium for the following year.

A lot of people nowadays have a rolling travel insurance that will cover them for 12 months or several years at one time. This can represent a considerable saving if you or your family are likely to be doing a lot of travelling. You should shop around for travel insurance rather than just taking out theinsurance that the travel agent offers as you may be able to make significant savings.

Often, insurance that is included as part of a 'package deal' can be quite expensive - you can usually opt out of this as long as you can show that you have adequate existing cover. There are at least three aspects of travel insurance that you might require:

• Cover for the actual bookings/tickets in case you need to cancel (cancellation insurance) - find out in what circumstances you can be reimbursed for cancellation.
• Cover against theft/loss of luggage, money or property whilst on holiday - check whether your house insurance already covers this
• Cover for hospitalisation or other medical expenses. You sould find out what medical treatment you can obtain at your destination, and whether extra cover is required.
